Indian Embassy in Italy after death of citizen in farm accident: Regrettable

New Delhi:

The Indian Embassy in Italy has expressed its condolences over the tragic death of an Indian national in the Italian city of Latina. The labourer, identified as Satnam Singh, died on Wednesday after he was left on the roadside following an accident in which he severed his arm.

The Indian Embassy confirmed that it is working with local authorities to reach out to the family and provide them with consular assistance.

A statement released on X said: “The Embassy is deeply saddened by the unfortunate death of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in active contact with the local authorities. Our immediate priority is to contact the family and offer the necessary consular assistance.”

Satnam Singh suffered serious injuries on Monday while working on a farm in Latina, a rural area south of Rome that employs many Indian migrant workers.

According to Labor Minister Marina Calderone, who addressed Parliament, “the Indian farm worker who was involved in a serious accident in the province of Latina and was left in critical condition has died.” She condemned the incident as an act of barbarism and assured that investigations are underway in the hope that those responsible will receive justice.

According to reports from the Flai CGIL union, Singh, who was working without valid papers, lost his arm while operating a hay cutting machine.

“Instead of helping him, the employers cold-heartedly left him near his home,” the union reported.

After an emergency call from Singh’s wife and friends, the local police responded immediately and sent a rescue helicopter.

The centre-left Democratic Party condemned the man’s treatment as a “defeat for civilisation” in an area known for worker exploitation.
