Former Spandau Ballet singer Ross Davidson told a woman she “deserved it” when he raped her in his apartment, a court heard.

Davidson, 36, allegedly wanted sex up to six times a night and forced himself on women who turned him down, it is alleged. Jurors heard the Scotsman was “a bit of a sex symbol” after starring in the West End musical We Will Rock You about a decade ago.

Davidson became lead singer of Spandau Ballet in 2018 and was best known to fans as Ross Wild, jurors heard. Wood Green Crown Court heard Davidson had “a darker side” and “expected to get sex on demand”, it is claimed. He is said to have filmed himself groping sleeping women and liked to act out rape scenarios.

Aberdeen-born Davidson had “a fetish” for wanting to have sex with sleeping women, the jury was told. He is accused of multiple sex offences against five women, three of whom he allegedly raped. Davidson denies all the charges against him. Davidson is said to have filmed himself allegedly raping the first woman after they had an argument in his flat on October 1, 2013, it is alleged.

She testified in court that Davidson called her a “slut” and a “whore” before raping her. “I was lying on the side of his bed with my feet on the floor, facing the outside wall,” she said. “He was in front of me and then next to me on the bed.”

She said Davidson was aggressive and angry and paced around the bedroom. Prosecutor Richard Hearnden asked her: “What did he say?” The woman replied: “I think again insults, I can’t remember, just aggressive comments, he was belittling me, calling me a slut, calling me a whore,” she replied.

Mr Hearnden: “Did he touch you at all?” She replied: “Yes, he started touching me, he invaded my private parts and then started touching me.” Mr Hearnden then said: “Where did he touch me first?” “I assume it was here first, on the shoulders and breasts,” she replied.

The prosecutor asked: “He touched you, what was going through your mind?” She replied: “What’s wrong? I was in tears, we had an argument. This is not the right time to get that close to someone, let alone start something.”

She told the court: “He suddenly got quiet and told me this is what I want, this is what I deserve. Then he pushed me back onto the bed, my top was down, and he unbuckled the belt of my jeans and kind of pulled them down.

“He pushed me on the bed, pulled my top down, unbuttoned my jeans and came on top of me. Then I was on the bed and he was on top of me. Then he had sex with me and told me this is what I want, this is what I use my body for.

“He was quite aggressive, quite strong, there was no point in me trying to push him off me. I think I was on my back on the floor and he was on top of me. He was telling me what I wanted and his face was very close to mine. We had an argument, you don’t do that in an argument,” she said.
The prosecutor asked her: “Did you say something?”

The woman replied: “I said ‘what are you doing, stop, get off me’, something like that. I repeatedly didn’t scream, this person’s face was close to me, it didn’t have to be loud. The whole time I was crying, it was pretty obvious I didn’t want him on me, it wasn’t my decision for him to be there.

“I think he came inside me, then he stood up and smoked a cigarette. Then he said, ‘You look like you’ve just been raped.’ At the time I thought to myself, ‘Surely that didn’t just happen.’ I didn’t want to believe what he was saying was true because it was for self-preservation. The bedroom has doors that open onto his outside area, he was in that area and you could see him there and still have a conversation with him.”
The prosecutor asked the woman: “Why didn’t you report it straight away?” to which she replied: “I didn’t believe it had happened, I didn’t want to believe it, it became normal, it became something I felt I deserved. He put his penis in me, in my vagina.” Mr Hearnden asked: “Do you remember if he put his penis anywhere else?” The woman replied: “I don’t think so. To be honest I swept it under the carpet a bit, with everything that had happened. I felt like I’d done quite a lot wrong, it just became normal, it didn’t seem as bad as it was until I had a moment to step back and reassess it from a different perspective. It took me a long time to process that he had raped me.”
The prosecutor asked her: “Did you and he ever discuss it?” The woman said: “He didn’t discuss it with me. I brought it up years later and he said, ‘No, I don’t remember that.'” When questioned by police, Davidson claimed “everything was consensual between him and the women in question and he stressed that he was unconventional in his sexual preferences.” Davidson, from Finchley, north London, denies three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, one count of voyeurism, one count of intimidation and one count of controlling behaviour.

He replaced Tony Hadley as lead singer of Spandau Ballet in 2018 after playing Elvis Presley in the hit West End musical Million Dollar Quartet alongside the band’s bassist Martin Kemp. The process continues.
