A Texas man died after being electrocuted in a hot tub at a private resort in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, on Tuesday, and a woman was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Sonora state officials said Jorge Guillen, 43, and Lizette Zambrano, 35, of El Paso, Texas, were in a hot tub at the Sonoran Sea Resort shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Jorge suffered an electric shock and, according to Mexican broadcaster Norte Digital, his wife Lizette was taken to a US hospital and remains in critical condition.

While officials are still trying to determine the exact circumstances of the incident, it is believed that an electric shock was passed through the tub while people were inside.

According to the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Sonora, an eyewitness first noticed that the couple was not moving in the hot tub.

A video capturing the aftermath of the tragic accident is making the rounds on social media. The footage shows people gathering around a hot tub at the Sonoran Sea Resort in Puerto Penasco after a witness saw an unconscious couple in the water.
Horrified onlookers can be heard screaming, and some walk away from the tragic scene. Others crowd around the tub to help. A body can be seen floating in the water.

The witness told officers on scene that she tried to get into the tub after noticing that the couple were unresponsive, but suffered a shock when she tried to get in.

It is unclear whether more people were injured.

A video capturing the aftermath of the tragic incident is making the rounds on social media.

The footage shows a crowd standing around the hot tub on the resort grounds as people watch and scream in horror. Others cover their eyes or walk away.

Meanwhile, a submerged body is seen floating in the water and another person is seen lying flat on their back outside the hot tub. A woman is seen performing CPR on her.

As AP reported, the tourist couple both had Mexican-American citizenship.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Lizette is an elementary school teacher in El Paso.

A friend of Lizette expressed her condolences over the tragic incident in a post on Facebook.

“When I woke up this morning, we received a message from our best friend’s mother. A message you don’t want to wake up to. As many of you have seen on social media and the news, a tragic event has occurred.

“I won’t go into details here. It would be greatly appreciated if you could all donate to help bring Jorge home and cover medical costs. Lizzette still has a long road to recovery and we are all here to help her along the way.”

Lizette’s friends have started a GoFundMe campaign to help with medical costs and to transport Jorge’s body to the United States.

“Our best friends experienced a terrible accident. Jorge had a heart of gold and was always there for family and friends. The love they shared was eternal. We are asking for your help to bring him home and help with medical expenses for them,” the GoFundMe post reads.

Lizette Zambrano, who remains in critical condition, is an elementary school teacher in El Paso, Texas. Her friends have started a GoFundMe campaign to help her with medical expenses.
