Phoenix police investigate fatal shooting that led to I-10 closure

A fatal shooting Monday morning closed westbound I-10 during the morning rush hour. Department of Public Safety officers responded to a single-vehicle crash and found the driver suffering from a gunshot wound.

State police arrived at the scene of the crash near 7th Avenue shortly after 3:30 a.m. They found a vehicle that had crashed into a barrier with a gunshot victim inside. DPS turned the investigation over to Phoenix police.

“I think investigators are currently assuming he was shot while he was traveling in his car. We will, of course, be able to narrow that down completely, if you will,” said Phoenix Police Sergeant Robert Scherer.

The case has only been declared fatal, but further details on the final cause of death will be released by the coroner later this week.

The investigators completed their work and the highway was reopened to traffic early Monday afternoon.
