Buffalo Woman Shares Her Secret to Long Life on Her 100th Birthday

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Cake, good music and your loved ones by your side, there’s no better way to spend your 100th birthday.

“I have to thank everyone who contributed to this wonderful reunion of all my best friends, neighbors and doctors,” said Dorothy Mergi.

She celebrated at Templeton Landing Saturday afternoon, a day after her big milestone.

Mergi spent 26 years as a chief nursing officer at Buffalo General in labor and delivery.

“I have never regretted a single day,” Mergi said. “Seeing the expression of pleasure during a couple’s day… it was very satisfying.”

She is a fan of bingo, scrabble, knitting and the Golden Girls.

And we asked him what is his secret to a long and fulfilling life? She says it’s the influence you have on others.

“What can they do to make life easier and more pleasant, adorable. That’s the secret. We have to stick together to keep it beautiful,” Mergi said.

She has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She has a son, Donald, and her daughter Susan died after a battle with cancer.

Susan’s dying wish was for Dorothy to get the 100th birthday celebration she deserves, so her grandchildren made sure of that.
