According to initial information, the Montana Highway Patrol reported a “fatal” accident. However, no further details were provided.

Crash caused immediate backups

MHP was dispatched to the scene at around 7:20 a.m. and within minutes the mile-long traffic jam began. By 8 a.m. the southbound traffic jam had extended across the Flats and was slowing traffic in Lolo.

Northbound traffic initially backed up to the Blue Mountain intersection, but started moving again shortly before 8 p.m.

Further delays are expected

Because this is reportedly a fatal accident, emergency responders and accident investigators will likely be on the scene for at least a few hours, so expect things to be slow throughout the morning. And if you can get to Missoula and delay your trip or work from a remote location, that’s probably your best bet.
