Raped by Father, Ostracized by Relatives, Survival Scripts SSC Success | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: It’s not just the physical pain that a minor rape survivor has to live with. She also has to overcome enormous psychological trauma, especially when she was attacked by her father.

In January 2023, she complained of severe abdominal pain and doctors confirmed that she was pregnant. A few months later she gave birth to a male child.

She went back to school while a police case was registered, her medical tests were ongoing, investigators asked questions and other legal issues were resolved. She was temporarily placed in a nursing home and her child was also kept away, without her being given details. All this left the girl very little time to prepare for the exams. “Maybe she spent a month preparing just before the exams,” her maternal uncle told TOI.

Despite solid evidence in the form of a DNA report confirming that her father was the biological father of her child, he claimed in court that he had been falsely implicated in the case. But the evidence presented by the police made his guilt clear. The court sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for the rest of his life and also awarded the girl compensation of Rs 15,000. “Say it and call anyone who worries you, otherwise you will be blamed,” the girl says.

The 17-year-old was raped by her uncle and the case was first reported in 2022. “After we arrested the accused, the entire family and relatives turned against us. We were excluded. I wonder if we will go through a situation like this again in my lifetime,” the girl told TOI. But as soon as the results were announced and she earned a 9.3 GPA, she says she was flooded with calls from the same people who had ostracized the family.

This success gave both girls the impetus to pursue higher studies. Both say they have now realized how important education is.

“In addition to clarification, we must have the courage to address any violence and hold the defendants accountable,” said the 17-year-old. We saw how police officers handled our cases and that inspired us to become police officers. We want to help others like us and bring them justice.”

The girls also thanked the then Meerpet SHO M Mahender Reddy for being a strong support to them during the investigation. “I am glad that the girls cleared the SSC despite so many difficulties and that a case ended in conviction. We hope for strict punishment in the second case too,” the official told TOI. The 17-year-old’s case is still before the court.
