Officials are warning against using gasoline to start interior fires after an incident at a home in Croton-on-Hudson

The Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department is reminding residents of the dangers of using gasoline to start interior fires after crews responded to an incident at a home Friday.

Firefighters traveled to the scene after heavy smoke was reported coming from the chimney.

Upon arrival, they discovered a fire in the chimney with heavy smoke coming into and around the residence.

Officers determined the homeowner had used gasoline and paper to start the fire.

The units were deployed for just over an hour and the flames were extinguished.

The department urges residents to never use highly flammable fuel to start fires indoors.
