It is believed he was on the island with his mates for a rugby tournament when the alleged sexual assault occurred.

His accuser, believed to be a 21-year-old, told police he forced himself on her in a hotel when he ripped off her dress.

She then accused him of forcing her to perform a sexual act on him before raping her.

The couple met for the first time at a bar at the party resort earlier in the day and spent most of the day together on the beach.

The alleged sexual assault is said to have occurred on a terrace at the hotel around 5 a.m. on Monday.

Guardia Civil officers discovered the suspect’s identity a few hours after the first formal complaint.

A hearing will now be held behind closed doors to consider whether the unnamed suspect should remain in custody or be released pending an ongoing criminal investigation.

The accuser underwent regular forensic examinations following the hearing of her claims.

The Civil Guard has not yet made any official comment.

A well-informed source said: “He was on holiday in Mallorca with a group of rugby players who had come to the island to take part in an event.

“He was arrested shortly before boarding his flight back to the UK.”

A second source on the island said the man was an active member of the British armed forces.

He is believed to have been born abroad but lives in the UK.
