Indiana Fever Announces 13-Player Roster; Temporarily suspend the contract

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever announced its Opening Day roster Monday morning, which included 13 players.

WNBA teams are technically only able to keep 12 players on Opening Day rosters, but the Fever have temporarily suspended Damiris Dantas’ contract. Dantas was in her home country of Brazil for the first week of training camp due to visa issues and a family emergency. While she was in Indianapolis during the second week of camp, she did not practice due to a right knee injury.

Dantas will be inactive for the period her contract is suspended, which will likely be until she recovers from her knee injury. She is still part of the team’s official roster and her salary counts against Indiana’s cap.

Dantas’ contract suspension means that both Temi Fagbenle, who had a training camp contract with the Fever, and second-year forward Victaria Saxton were included in the opening day squad.

Fagbenle has not played in the WNBA since 2019, instead choosing to play professionally in her home country of Great Britain. But she impressed Christie Sides and the Fever coaching staff on her return to the league, earning her a place in the squad.

Saxton is in her second year on the Fever squad. In 2023, she played sparingly, appearing in just 15 of the Fever’s 40 games. She only played a few minutes in the preseason, less than 10 minutes against Dallas and none against Atlanta.

Caitlin Clark and Celeste Taylor are the two freshmen on the Opening Day roster. Clark is obviously a cornerstone prospect, while Taylor stood out with her defensive abilities and made the final Opening Day roster.
