Five-year-old boy killed in freak accident in Bengaluru

A five-year-old boy died and another boy, also five, was injured in a freak accident while they were playing outside their house in Murugeshpalya on Sunday morning (May 12).

The deceased named Aarav was playing outside the house with another boy from his neighborhood while his family was busy preparing for a family function.

Meanwhile, the approximately 18-year-old defendant, who was related to a police officer who lived next door, was cleaning the car in front of his house. Amid reports that the accused was also an underage boy, police said he was “around 18 years old”.

The investigation revealed that the defendant started the car and stepped on the accelerator. The car then moved forward, knocking over a number of vehicles before crushing the two boys who were playing outside their houses. Both children suffered serious injuries. Residents of the area rushed to the children’s aid and took the two to the nearby Manipal Hospital. However, Aarav, who sustained a severe head injury, died on the way to the hospital and was declared dead while the other boy suffered fractures in his leg.

Soon after the accident, the accused boy ran into the house and locked himself until the Jeevan Bhima Nagar traffic police rushed to the accident spot and arrested the boy for further investigation.

Late boy Aarav’s birthday is due next month, lamented his father Tamare Kannan. Based on the father’s complaint, the police have now initiated proceedings for intentional negligence and negligent homicide of the teenager and arrested him. A forensic examination of the vehicle and the accident scene is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident.
