New Orleans arrests John Pittman in connection with chainsaw attack investigation

New Orleans police arrested a man in connection with a chainsaw attack on Monday. New Orleans police arrested 34-year-old John Pittman after he used a chainsaw to severe a woman’s arm in Gentilly. Police arrived at the 3500 block of Franklin Avenue in Gentilly around 2 p.m. WDSU obtained video of a chaotic scene. “Upon arrival, officers found the victim with what appeared to be a severed arm,” New Orleans police spokeswoman Reese Harper said. A chainsaw was observed being placed in a brown evidence bag Monday afternoon while several evidence markers lined the sidewalk and stairs of the Franklin Avenue home. Tawain Crockett, who lives nearby, said she heard the chaos. “To see and hear something like that is very, it’s shocking. It’s disturbing,” Crockett said. According to New Orleans police, the woman whose arm was severed is 70 years old. Police believe she is the suspect’s mother, but details about the attack are unknown. “Currently, investigators are in the process of gathering information and determining a motive,” Harper said. This video, obtained by WDSU, shows Pittman wrestling with officers before the group falls backwards down the stairs. A female officer is then seen holding her head as she stumbles toward a nearby car. Two officers were injured, according to Harper. “Our understanding is that they sustained minor to moderate injuries while engaging the suspect,” Harper said. The video then shows additional officers from multiple agencies wrestling with Pittman. He is eventually placed in a car just before the chainsaw is carried away. Police said the woman, whose arm was severed, is in critical condition. Pittman reportedly lost a tooth and had several abrasions after the incident. “I just don’t feel good about it. I really don’t,” Crockett said. According to NOPD, one of the officers injured in the incident suffered a broken leg and head and neck injuries after falling down the stairs. The second officer was bitten on his left arm. Both officers have been released from the hospital. One officer, a man, is back on duty. Another officer, a woman, will be back on duty in a few days, according to NOPD. Police say the 70-year-old victim remains in critical condition. Pittman is charged with aggravated assault by laceration and resisting arrest.
