Truck driver from Risca raped and abused children

Christopher Murray, 63, who lived in Risca and Caldicot, committed a series of crimes after attacking three girls and a boy in the 1990s.

Some of the attacks had taken place while he was drunk and forced his victims to watch adult pornography.

The boy was attacked in the cab of a truck that Murray used during his job as a truck driver delivering frozen food.

His victims revealed the horror of what they had endured as prosecutor Ruth Smith read out harrowing statements during his sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court.

One of the defendants said Murray’s crimes had had a “hugely damaging” impact on her life, and she described feeling at times that she would be “better off dead.”

Another said: “I felt like my childhood had been completely stolen from me.”

Murray, last of Heol Llansantffraid, Sarn, Bridgend, pleaded guilty to several offences including rape, sexual assault and gross indecency with a child.

Miss Smith explained that the defendant was not new to the attention of Gwent Police.

The pedophile was imprisoned at the beginning of this century for sexual crimes against children.

In November 2001, he was sentenced to four years in prison for indecently abusing a 13-year-old girl in Monmouthshire.

This sentence came just months after he was sentenced to 18 months in prison for sexually abusing another underage girl.

In 1985, Murray was given a suspended sentence after indecently assaulting a nine-year-old girl in the Bettws area of Newport.

His representative Matthew Roberts said the best mitigation for his client was his admission of guilt.

As a result, his lawyer stressed, the victims were spared the hard work of a court case.

“The defendant has insight into his actions – he regrets what he did,” added Mr Roberts.

Judge Victoria Francis told Murray: “This was a litany of crimes against children.”

“It was absolutely horrific.

“You have committed insults over and over again.”
