Man sentenced to 17 years in prison for raping his ex-girlfriend

A man who raped his ex-girlfriend five years ago after luring her to a meeting under false pretenses has been sentenced to 17 years in prison.

The man, who was on trial for two counts of rape, was found guilty of one count in April. The victim, who was not present at the sentencing, claimed the man was angry because he suspected she was with someone else.

The incident occurred approximately one month after the six-month relationship ended. The victim reported that the man was ignorant, short-tempered, abusive, moody, jealous, and appeared to have multiple personalities.

She also spoke of several occasions on which she was severely beaten by him. Judge Ann-Marie Smith acknowledged that the prisoner was exposed to extreme violence and cruelty during his childhood, which may have contributed to his misogynistic behaviour.

She stressed that the prisoner had never received counselling or psychological treatment, which allowed his violent and misogynistic tendencies to escalate. The court is of the opinion that the prisoner should undergo intensive psychological counselling and treatment.
