Screenwriter of “Star Trek V” and “Passenger 57” was 71

David Loughery, the screenwriter who wrote the action films Dreamscape, Star Trek: V – The Final Frontier and with Wesley Snipes in the leading role Money train And Passenger 57has died. He was 71.

Loughery died of skin cancer on Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Florida, said his friend Fred Rappaport The Hollywood Reporter.

Loughery worked with director Joseph Ruben on Dreamscape (1984), with Dennis Quaid; The good son (1993), with Macauley Culkin; Money train (1995), with Woody Harrelson alongside Snipes in the sequel to White men can’t jump; And Caught off guard (2013) with Michelle Monaghan and Michael Keaton.

Loughery was born on March 3, 1953, in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated from Ball State University and then received his master’s degree from the University of Iowa. In 1981, he appeared as story credits in an episode of the ABC series “The Last Man.” Hard but warm.

After his film debut on DreamscapeHe was the sole screenwriter and shared the story shares with Star Trek: V – The Final Frontier (1989), the installment in the Paramount series directed by star William Shatner.

Loughery followed with Flashback (1990), with Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland; Passenger 57 (1992), directed by Kevin Hooks; and The Three Musketeers (1993), the adaptation directed by Stephen Herek and starring Sutherland, Charlie Sheen and Chris O’Donnell.

His resume as a screenwriter also includes Neil LaBute’s Terrace with lake view (2008) with Samuel L. Jackson and Obsessed (2009) starring Beyoncé and Idris Elba. He was also the producer of the more recent The Intruder (2019), Fatal (2020) and Smash (2022).

He leaves behind his wife Mel, his mother Joan and his siblings William and Amy.
