Strong storms destroy large trees and snap power poles near Grant Park in Atlanta – 95.5 WSB

ATLANTA — Strong and violent storms moved across northern Georgia early Thursday, bringing devastating wind gusts.

Our partners at Channel 2 Action News have spotted large trees and utility poles around the Atlanta metro area.

Several large white oak trees were felled near Grant Park in Atlanta and one blocked Cherokee Avenue.

Georgia Power workers responded to safely remove downed power lines and repair broken poles and blown transformers.

In the same area, utility poles were torn from their bases, creating potentially dangerous situations.

As of 11:30 a.m., Georgia Power said there have been 298 power outages affecting 10,331 of its customers across Georgia.

Georgia EMC said there were 16,884 power outages statewide, with the majority of them in north Georgia.

As of 11:30 a.m., there were 11,911 outages in north Georgia, 1,941 in northeast Georgia, 1,291 in metro Atlanta, 37 in west Georgia, 713 in eastern Georgia, 150 in southwest Georgia, 810 in south Georgia, and 18 in southeast Georgia.
