Houston residents still without power after Hurricane Beryl

HOUSTON (CBS, KYMA/KECY) – Joyce Murray lives in northeast Houston, where many people are still going a day without power after Hurricane Beryl, and part of her street is blocked by a large tree.

This is what Murray’s house looks like outside: a large tree blocking part of her street, and after the week Murray had, she was too exhausted to talk, but still wanted to share what happened.

“That tree fell. And thank God it didn’t hit the house. It fell in the street. And it stayed here,” Murray shared.

For days, Murray was without power and without help.

“Every entity is telling me, ‘Go somewhere and cool off.’ Well, I couldn’t get out,” Murray added.

His neighbors finally intervened.

“I came in and cut off three limbs,” Murray said.

And this weekend his power came back, but it’s been a tough week for Murray.

“Mentally, my state is just… I’ve been drained because I’m not a young person anymore. I’m 79 years old and it’s very difficult,” Murray said.

While Murray has power, his friend Trish Henderson, who lives a few blocks away, does not.

“I lost power on Tuesday. I had no power. I think it happened Wednesday for about six hours and then it went out again and I haven’t had any since,” Henderson said.

Henderson used his car to seek refuge from the heat.

“It’s the only way I’m going to survive, because I’m not going to stay in this hot house. And they find me passed out because I don’t want to go out like that,” Henderson added.

Even though she, too, has a damaged tree in her yard and is waiting for the power to come back on for good, Henderson is just grateful to be okay.

“I’m not alone. Everyone is going through this and we have to get through it,” Henderson said.
