Police: Mother arrested after street race with 8-month-old baby in car

OCALA, Fla. (TMX) – Two mothers were arrested in Florida on Friday for participating in a street race at over 90 miles per hour with their children in the car, police said.

Ocala police said in a statement Monday that 22-year-old Jamirria Blunt and 22-year-old Kiara Johnson were arrested and charged with highway racing and child neglect and booked into the Marion County Jail.

According to police, Officer D. Barry observed a race between a Cadillac sedan and a Toyota sedan in the 3100 block of SW College Road at approximately 1:50 a.m. on July 5.

Using radar, he detected cars traveling at 93 miles per hour in a 45-mile zone.

Barry pursued the vehicles and stopped the Cadillac Blunt was driving in the 3800 block of SW College Road. A 15-year-old female passenger was sitting in the front seat.

The Toyota also stopped and another officer came to assist. Johnson, who was driving the Toyota, had an 8-month-old baby in a rear-facing car seat in the car.

“Racing poses serious dangers, including an increased risk of serious accidents and fatalities. We have zero tolerance for highway racing and will do everything we can to ensure our roads are safe,” police said.

Blunt and Johnson were each released from jail on $1,000 bail.
