Man and woman charged with shooting of police officer in Norfolk

NORFOLK, Virginia – A Norfolk man and woman are facing charges after a police officer was shot multiple times Saturday while assisting in a child welfare investigation, according to a Norfolk Police Department news release.

When police arrived at the Arcadia Street home around 3:20 p.m., police say Cassandra Smith became “combative” with officers. Then a male suspect, Samuel M. Burton, began shooting at officers.

During the shootout, both an officer and Burton were shot multiple times, police said.

Burton, 29, was charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, intentional assault on a police officer and use of a firearm.

Smith, 23, was charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault on a police officer, disturbing the peace and obstruction of justice.

Burton was shot by police and suffered life-threatening injuries. After being released from the hospital, he will be held without bail in the Norfolk City Jail.

Smith is currently in jail without bail.

The injured officer is expected to be OK and the other officers involved are on leave while Virginia State Police investigate the incident.
