Driver failed to stop after fatal crash on Friday – First update from the state

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian crash that occurred yesterday afternoon in Newark that left one man dead.

Officials said that on July 5, 2024, at approximately 4:14 p.m., a pedestrian was walking north on the right shoulder of Salem Church Road, north of Michaels Lane. At the same time, an unknown white vehicle was also traveling north on Salem Church Road, north of Michaels Lane.

For unknown reasons, the vehicle was unable to maintain its lane and entered the shoulder, where it struck the pedestrian. The vehicle that caused the accident did not stay at the scene and fled north on Salem Church Road.

The pedestrian, a 57-year-old Newark man, was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of his family and relatives.

The conspicuous vehicle is a white vehicle of unknown make and model with possible damage to the right front.
