A ranger is injured and the suspect dies in a shooting in Yellowstone Park

A park ranger is injured and a suspect is dead after a shootout in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, the National Park Service reported Thursday.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night into Thursday morning, the park service said in a news release. Rangers received a report that an armed individual was making threats in the popular Canyon Village area, which offers lodges, cabins and campgrounds. Rangers made contact and exchanged gunfire with the individual, the NPS said in a news release.

The person was killed in the altercation and a Yellowstone Police Department park ranger was injured. The ranger is in stable condition at a regional hospital. There is no ongoing threat to the public, NPS said. The area around the Canyon Lodge complex has been closed for an investigation that is being conducted in cooperation between NPS and the FBI.

Officials with the National Park Service and the FBI did not immediately respond to requests for further details.

Fatal attacks are rare in national parks; between 2007 and May 21, 2024, the NPS recorded only 43 murders.
