Man dies after rafting accident on Green River

A 50-year-old man from Sandy, Utah, has died in a rafting accident on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument.

According to the National Park Service, staff were notified about a boat stuck on a rock in the Hells Half Mile rapids around 4 p.m. Thursday. One person was missing and believed to be trapped under the raft. The group managed to untie and secure the boat, but the person was unresponsive, had lost his life jacket, and was drifting downstream.

River Patrol rangers traveled through the Lodore Canyon to intercept the group and conduct recovery operations, with additional support by vehicle on Echo Park Road.

Adrift, a commercial rafting company, found the body about ten river miles downstream from the accident scene and notified memorial staff at 7:45 a.m. Friday.

The body was taken to the Moffat County Coroner. The rafter’s name is being withheld while family members are being notified.
