Houston police investigate shooting of suicidal man | Upper Gulf Coast

HOUSTON, Texas – Houston police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred at 7900 North Stadium Drive around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The identity of the deceased adult male is pending confirmation of the identity by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. According to Detectives V. Lewis and M. Estep of the HPD Special Investigations Unit, HPD patrol officers responded to a welfare check call at an apartment complex at the above address and learned from a reporter that the man was suicidal at the location. Officers attempted to make contact with the man by knocking on the door, but he did not respond. Concerned for the man’s safety and with assistance from Houston Fire Department personnel, officers entered the apartment.

When officers entered the apartment, they announced themselves and as they entered the living room, the suspect fired one shot. As officers exited the apartment, the suspect fired another shot. Officers set up a perimeter, after which the suspect fired a third shot. HPD SWAT officers then arrived on the scene.

When SWAT officers arrived, they found the man lying unconscious on the bathroom floor. He had apparently inflicted a self-inflicted gunshot wound. HFD paramedics pronounced the man dead.

As is typical in incidents where a suspect dies in the presence of HPD officers, this case is being investigated by HPD’s Special Investigations Unit and Internal Affairs Division.
