Mocha cyclist dies in accident on Heroes Highway

On Tuesday evening, at around 10:15 p.m., an accident occurred on the New Mandela – Eccles connecting road (eastern carriageway of the Heroes Highway) in which 54-year-old cyclist Celus Griffith was killed, police said in a statement yesterday.

The accident involved car #HD 1646, driven by Dexroy Fredricks, a 27-year-old from East La Penitence, Georgetown, and cyclist Griffith, a 54-year-old security guard from Lot 49 Nelson Street Mocha, East Bank Demerara. The driver of the car told investigators that he was travelling southbound on the eastbound carriageway (eastern lane) of the New Mandela to Eccles link and near the Sheriff Security Service, he noticed a cyclist suddenly enter the path of his vehicle as it was changing from the westbound to the eastbound lane, forcing him to brake. He swerved further east to avoid a collision, causing the car to collide with the bicycle, the statement said.
