Seth Wilson, 49, is seen in a photo provided by Metro Police. Wilson was shot and killed by police on Thursday, June 20, 2024, after he threatened to shoot other residents with a rifle he was holding.

Metro Police officials on Tuesday released details of a police-involved shooting that left a man dead last week, showing video of the man pointing a rifle at both a civilian and police officers.

Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi presented details of the shooting that occurred at an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Ninth Street on the afternoon of June 20. Several people called 911 about a man with a rifle making threats, and police learned that 49-year-old Seth Wilson, a resident of the apartment, was armed with a rifle in the building.

Surveillance footage from the apartment provided by police showed a resident accidentally walking in front of Wilson’s gun as he aimed it at him, not noticing Wilson standing behind a door. The man then called police, who arrived shortly afterward.

“There’s a guy with a rifle, a semi-automatic rifle, standing at the door where my head was,” the resident said in the 911 call. “I don’t think that can even be true.”

A police sergeant was initially able to reach Wilson by phone and tried to persuade him to surrender, but hung up just a few minutes later. Wilson then left his third-floor apartment with the rifle, where Metro Police had stationed officers Andrew Buckland and Matthew Kravitz, also armed with rifles, on Tuesday.

Bodycam footage provided by the department shows the two officers ordering Wilson to drop the rifle. Wilson lowered the rifle toward the officers, who then fired a total of 14 shots at the man. Wilson died at the scene and at no point did he fire the rifle.

Both officers have been placed on leave per Metro policy while the department continues to investigate the shooting. Wilson’s death is the fifth officer-involved shooting and the fifth fatal police shooting of 2024. At this point in 2023, there have only been two officer-involved shootings, according to police.

A sixth officer-involved shooting also occurred Tuesday at a home in the 2000 block of Valley Drive after police responded to a robbery. The suspect who was shot is currently hospitalized and his condition is unknown.
