As temperatures rise, some Houstonians are looking for ways to escape the heat. Discovery Green is the ideal refreshment spot for residents due to its shaded paths and wading pools.

Cesar Duque and his family recently traveled to Houston from Orlando and were shocked by the high temperatures. He said they went to the park to pass the time and cool off before heading home.

“I have friends who come from here. They told me it’s usually hot but not that hot,” Duque said. “I’m just enjoying the park even though it’s beautiful.”

The warm weather brought many daycare groups to the water games. Atavia Banks took her students to enjoy the water fountains. She says it’s important to keep children safe when playing in the sun.

“Hydration… all day, staying full of fluids and taking a break, getting into the shade when you have time,” Banks said. “I’ve been here all my life so it’s always hot in the summer, so you just have to be prepared for it.”

Kyah Parisian makes snow cones for those who prefer to refresh themselves with sweet treats. Despite the heat, she finds ways to stay cool while working.

“I have my air conditioning on full blast right now, I’m wearing shorts and it’s good to work with ice because it keeps me cool throughout the day.”

Temperatures are expected to reach 108 degrees and the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning through Wednesday.
