Death investigation underway after 76-year-old man’s body found floating in Lake James State Park, officials say

QUILT TRAILS. GOOD MORNING AND THANKS FOR JOINING US. I’M STAR CONNOR, WITH DILLON AND DILLON. IT’S SO HOT. AND IT’S GOING TO DRIVE PEOPLE CRAZY TODAY, RIGHT? DRIVE THEM CRAZY, I MEAN, I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH MYSELF. I NEED COLD ICE WATER, UM, A POOL, A LAKE. IS ANYONE WANTING TO OFFER THAT? YOU KNOW, LEMONADE, SWEET TEA, SOMETHING, SOMETHING TO DO. SOMETHING TO STAY COOL THIS WEEKEND. IT’S GOING TO BE HOT. A HEAT WAVE IS COMING. TODAY IS REALLY THE FIRST DAY OF THIS PRESSURIZING HEAT. I’M FORECASTING 90S THIS WEEKEND. IF YOU TAKE THE HUMIDITY INTO ACCOUNT, IT’LL FEEL MORE LIKE 100 TO YOUR BODY. SO IT’S HOT WEATHER ON THE ATTACK, TO BE EXTREMELY RELIEVED. IT’S GOING TO STAY HOT FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS. ONLY A SMALL CHANCE OF RAIN. THERE MAY BE SOME CHANGES LATER NEXT WEEK, BUT EVEN THAT’S STILL A WAY FURTHER AWAY. LET’S GET OVER THIS HEAT WAVE HERE. FIRST, A HOT AND DARK VIEW OF GREENSBORO THIS MORNING. IT JUST LOOKS JUST LIKE THAT. LOTS OF SUNSHINE. WITH THE HAZE ON THE HORIZON, YOU CAN TELL IT’S GOING TO BE HOT. RIGHT NOW 76 IN GREENSBORO, WINSTON-SALEM 77, BOONE 58. SO IT’S A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLE UP THERE IN THE MOUNTAINS. BUT DOWN HERE IN THE PIEDMONT WHERE THE SUN IS BURNING DOWN, IT’S GOING TO BE HOT. 93 THE HIGHEST TEMPERATURE IN THE AFTERNOON. LOTS OF SUNSHINE FOR US WITH THAT SOUTH WIND OF ABOUT 3 TO 6 MPH. IT’S ALSO GOING TO BE A HOT BREEZE, WHICH DOESN’T REALLY HELP MAKE IT FEELING MORE COMFORTABLE OUTSIDE. THAT BREEZE FROM THE SOUTH IS ALSO ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY ARE INCREASING ALL OVER THE AREA. UNFORTUNATELY, THE HEAT WAVE IS GOING TO CONTINUE. THERE ARE SOME CHANCES OF RAIN, BUT WE CAN ALL USE A LITTLE RAIN, ONE ON SUNDAY AND ONE ON MONDAY. I’LL TALK MORE ABOUT IT AND SHOW YOU FUTURECAST TO HELP YOU PLAN FOR THOSE CHANCES OF RAIN. KEEP OUR FINGERS CROSSED. COMING SOON. ALL RIGHT. THANKS, DYLAN. IT’S 8:02 AM, THREE PEOPLE ARE DEAD AND 11 MORE INJURED. AFTER A SHOOTING AT A GROCERY STORE IN ARKANSAS. ARKANSAS STATE POLICE SAY TWO POLICE OFFICERS WERE ALSO INJURED IN THIS SHOOTING. THE SUSPECTED SHOOTER WAS INJURED AND ALSO TAKEN CAPTIVE. HE WAS LATER IDENTIFIED AS TARVIS EUGENE POSEY. POSEY IS CHARGED WITH TRIPLE MURDER WITH OTHER CHARGES PENDING. SEVERAL AGENCIES, INCLUDING THE DALLAS COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE AND ARKANSAS STATE POLICE, WERE ON SCENE NEAR THE MAD BUTCHER STORE IN FORDYCE AND PROVIDED BRIEF REPORTS ON THE SHOOTING. LOVED ONES OF THE VICTIMS SHARE THEIR REACTION TO THE ATTACK. I HAVE OWNED GUNS MY WHOLE LIFE AND NEVER, EVER, EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT A GUN GOING OUT AND SHOOTING PEOPLE BECAUSE I WAS MAD AT THEM OR FOR ANY OTHER REASON. THIS IS EVIL. AND, UM, SENSELESS. AND I HOPE JUSTICE IS SERVED. OFFICERS SAY THE INJURIES TO THE OFFICERS AND THE SUSPECT ARE NOT LIFE-THREATENING. AND JUST THIS MORNING, THE DAVIE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS LOOKING FOR A SUSPECT IN A KNIFE THAT TOOK PLACE DURING THE NIGHT. OFFICERS SAY THEY WERE CALLED TO THE HOUSE ON GLEN STREET IN MOCKSVILLE JUST BEFORE MIDNIGHT. THEY FOUND 62-YEAR-OLD MARK DUKES DEAD AFTER BEING STABBED MULTIPLE TIMES. INVESTIGATORS HAVE NAMED 32-YEAR-OLD DANNY CARTER AS A SUSPECT. THEY SAY HE LEFT THE SCENE BEFORE OFFICERS ARRIVED AND IS NO LONGER IN THE AREA. CARTER AND DUKES ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE KNOWN EACH OTHER, AND A MAN HAS BEEN CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH A FATAL SHOOTING IN WINSTON-SALEM. POLICE SAY JAKE GAGNE, THE FOURTH, WAS CAUGHT YESTERDAY BY U.S. MARSHALLS AND A SWAT TEAM IN GUARDS. TODAY HE IS CHARGED WITH THE MURDER OF RASHAD SIMS. OFFICERS FOUND SIMS SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES ON ETHEL DRIVE 12 DAYS AGO. POLICE SAY GAGNE AND SIMS KNEW EACH OTHER, AND GAGNE IS IN JAIL WITHOUT BAIL. HE IS DURING COURT APPEARANCE MONDAY, AND THE SUPREME COURT THIS WEEK UPHOLD A FEDERAL GUN LAW THAT GUN SAFETY ADVOCATES SAFETY COULD SAVE LIVES. THE LAW PREVENTS PEOPLE WHO RECEIVE A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RESISTANCE ORDER FROM OWNING A GUN. OPPONENTS ARGUE THE LAW VIOLATES THE SECOND AMENDMENT. DREW WALTER HAS MORE FROM WASHINGTON. IN A SWEEPING 8-1 DECISION, THE SUPREME COURT’S CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY COULD SENDS A SIGNAL THAT SOME LONG-STANDING GUN LAWS WILL LIKELY STAND OVER FUTURE SCREENING BY UPHOLDING A LAW THAT PREVENTS PEOPLE WHO RECEIVE A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE REStraining order FROM OWNING A GUN. A RULING TODAY PROVIDES THE STATUS QUO OF A GUN SAFETY LAW THAT LAWYERS SAY IS SAVES LIVES. THIS IS A HUGE RELIEF FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN THIS COUNTRY, A HUGE VICTORY FOR COMMON SENSE AND GUN SAFETY, AND THE OVERWHELMING MAJORITY OF AMERICANS ACROSS EVERY PARTY COMPLETELY AGREE WITH IT. IT’S A CASE FROM TEXAS IN WHICH A WOMAN OBTAINED A REStraining Order AGAINST HER PARTNER AFTER SHE ALLEGED HE HAD KICKED HER TO THE GROUND, DRAGGED HER INTO HIS CAR, AND THREATENED TO KILL HER. THE MAN, WHO WAS LATER SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS IN PRISON, FILED A LAWSUIT CLAIMING THAT THE FEDERAL LAW DEHIBITION OF HIS GUN RIGHTS WAS A VIOLATION OF HIS SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS… THE SUPREME COURT, IN ITS MAJORITY OPINION, DISAGREETED. CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN ROBERTS SAID, “SINCE THE FOUNDATION, OUR COUNTRY’S GUN LAWS HAVE CONTAINED PROVISIONS TO PREVENT PERSONS WHO THREATEN OTHERS WITH PHYSICAL HARM FROM ABUSE OF WEAPONS.” IN THE ONLY DISSENT, JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS SAID, “THIS DECISION IS A DIRECT ATTACK ON THE SECOND AMENDMENT BY RESTRICTING THE RIGHTS OF SOME PEOPLE. THE STORY IS NOT REALLY OVER YET.” STEVE DESCANO IS A PROGRESSIVE DIRECTOR IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA. HE WELCOMES TODAY’S RULING BY THE COURT, BUT SAYS IT HAS OPENED THE DOOR TO POSSIBLY CHANGING OR REDUCING OTHER GUN SAFETY LAWS. THERE ARE SOME THINGS IN IT THAT RAISE QUESTIONS ABOUT WHETHER THE RED FLAG LAW, WHICH EXISTS IN MANY STATES, CAN WITHSTAND FULL SCREENING. WHILE GUN SAFETY ADVOCATES WELCOMES TODAY’S RULING, IT SIGNALS DEEP DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE JUDGES ON GUN LAWS, AS
