Lord of the Rings legend hospitalized after traumatic incident

Sir Ian McKellen suffers a terrible fall and gives the media a shocking update days later

Ian McKellen was hospitalized after he suffered a heart attack during a performance of Player Kings in London’s West End, the BBC reported. While the extent of his injuries was unknown a few days ago, his representative Clair Dobbs told Deadline that he was “fine.” The incident occurred during a fight scene in which McKellen, who played John Falstaff, lost his footing and fell from the front of the stage.

The lights in the hall were immediately switched on and staff rushed to his aid as he screamed in pain. The performance was then cancelled and the audience sent home. One audience member, Sandro Trapani, described the incident as “very shocking” and expressed hope for McKellen’s recovery. McKellen has played roles such as Henry IV, Richard III, Richard II, Sherlock Holmes and many more. The veteran actor has worked in films and for the Royal Shakespeare Company and has led an impressive life.

McKellen, 85, has had a distinguished career spanning six decades and has earned him numerous accolades, including a Tony Award, six Olivier Awards, a Golden Globe, five BAFTA Awards, five Emmys and two Oscar nominations. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. Following the incident, London’s Noel Coward Theatre said: “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a rapid and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits.”

The statement also announced the cancellation of the June 18 performance to allow McKellen to rest. Affected ticket holders will be contacted to request a refund. The theater thanked the doctors and staff who helped: “Thank you to Doctors Rachel and Lee who were in the audience and to all the venue staff for their support.”

It has since been revealed that McKellen has suffered a broken wrist. Performances are expected to resume on Thursday. A spokesman for the production said: “Ian is recovering well and (we) look forward to welcoming him back into the production as soon as he is ready.”

In a personal statement issued through his press agent Clair Dobbs, Sir Ian McKellen thanked NHS medical staff: “I would like to thank everyone for their kind messages and support. Since the accident, my injuries have been diagnosed and treated by a number of experts, specialists and nurses from the National Health Service. To them, of course, I am extremely grateful. They have assured me that my recovery will be full and speedy and I look forward to returning to work.”
