The graduation ceremony was hosted by the LA County Office of Education and the LA County Probation Department. About a third of the graduates were currently on probation. At the time of the first attack, all of the students on probation were reportedly outside the auditorium and in a secure waiting area (according to the LA Times).

Los Angeles County Probation officials released a statement saying, “We are pleased to report that all incarcerated parolees and graduates of the Los Angeles County Office of Education are unharmed and safe. The safety of all youth in Los Angeles County is of the utmost importance. The Probation Department will continue to work with our neighboring law enforcement agencies and partners to honor the achievements of our youth while working to create a safer community.”
