Man arrested for raping 39-year-old Polish tourist in Dharamshala | Chandigarh News

Police in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly raping a tourist from Poland under the pretext of marriage.

Kartik Chauhan, a resident of Upper Bhagsu in Dharamshala, was arrested on Friday, a day after the 39-year-old Polish woman filed a police complaint.

The woman came to India last month on a tourist visa and arrived in McLeodganj two weeks ago, where she was staying in a rented accommodation, police said. According to police, Chauhan owns several rooms in McLeodganj which he rents out to tourists. He is said to have met the woman in a local shop and offered her one of his rooms as she was facing problems at her place of stay.

A police source said Chauhan took her to one of his rooms where he allegedly raped the woman after promising her marriage. “Forensic experts have taken samples from the room. The accused is being questioned and the Polish embassy has been informed,” the source added.

Kangra police superintendent Shalini Agnihotri said, “The victim is a foreigner. She came to India on a tourist visa for leisure activities. We have verified her allegations. The initial investigation has established the crime. The victim’s statement under Section 164 of CrPC was recorded before a local magistrate. It has emerged that they were in contact for the last two weeks. Further investigation is on.”

McLeodganj is a famous tourist spot where Tsuglag Khang, the home of the Dalai Lama, is located. Thousands of foreigners visit the area every year.
