Lucy Morgan

The parents of six-year-old Lucy Morgan, who died in a “strange accident” while playing with her brother earlier this month, are “grateful” for the support they have received since her death.

In a statement issued on behalf of Jesse and Bethany Morgan, Jill Anthony, who organized the Morgan family’s GoFundMe page, told PEOPLE, “They have received funds from the fundraiser and are grateful for the outpouring of love and support.”

The page was created on June 4, one day before Lucy succumbed to injuries sustained in the June 1 incident, which Jesse described on his blog as a “freak accident.”

As of June 11, the fundraiser has raised more than $131,000 of its $150,000 goal. The funds will provide the family with “extravagant financial support – to pay for meals while away from home, lodging for the family, medical expenses… whatever they need,” the GoFundMe description states.

The incident occurred as the Morgan family – Jesse, Bethany and their children Silas, Shiloh, Lucy and Atticus – were finishing up their family vacation in Maine, according to Maine State Police.

In Jesse’s blog, New Creation Living, the New Jersey pastor reported that the family was enjoying a “beautiful” morning at their lakeside vacation home in Limerick, Maine, on the last day of their vacation when the six-year-old was fatally injured while playing outside with her siblings.

“We were eating a quick lunch by the lake and the kids decided to try badminton in the front yard,” he wrote in a blog post. “Bethany and I were relaxing in the back when we heard screaming.”

While the children were playing, Lucy’s brother’s bat broke. More specifically, the aluminum shaft came loose from the wooden handle, “causing the shaft to hit the girl on the head and pierce her skull,” police later learned.

Emergency responders arrived on the scene around 12:00 p.m. local time and took the 6-year-old to a medical center in Sanford and then to another in Portland, where she was “immediately taken to the operating room” and surgeons “removed part of her skull to relieve pressure and treat her injury,” Jesse said.

The pastor continued to post updates about Lucy on his blog, at one point sharing that the family is “holding on” but “can’t imagine life without Lucy Goose.”

On June 4, the pastor announced that “there is a very high probability that she will die and meet Jesus within 24 hours.” According to police and the blog, Lucy died of her injuries the next day.

After her death, Jesse spoke about Lucy’s life in an interview with Fox News. The father of four told the newspaper that the six-year-old had a “very vibrant” personality, but was also “reserved” at times.

“Once you got to know her, she was very, very open and very funny,” he said, adding, “She was a tough girl.”

Green Pond Bible Chapel, the New Jersey church where Jesse serves as worship and discipleship pastor, will hold a memorial service for Lucy on June 15. The service will also be streamed live on the church’s website.
