Update on outfielder Kyle Tucker

Tucker was placed on 10-day IL retroactive to June 4 because of a contusion he suffered while fouling a ball on his right leg Monday. He will be eligible to return from the IL on June 14, when the Astros open a three-game series against the Tigers in Houston.

“That’s what I’m aiming for,” Tucker said.

Tucker was still using a crutch to take the strain off his right leg Saturday, but said he was able to walk with one crutch after using two in previous days. He said he had an X-ray that showed no fractures and an MRI and described the injury as “kind of a bone bruise.”

“Obviously, I’m not feeling as good as I would have hoped,” Tucker said before the Astros’ game Saturday against the Angels. “But every day it gets better. I’m able to walk on it a little more, put a little pressure on it.

Tucker did not watch Friday’s game at Angel Stadium from the dugout due to difficulty navigating space. He said he hopes to start walking without crutches again by Sunday and, potentially, do some baseball activities on the field Monday in San Francisco.

Entering Saturday, Tucker remained tied for second among major league players in home runs (19) and fourth among qualified hitters in OPS (.979). He also led the Astros in RBIs (40) and stolen bases (10) and is among the candidates for early American League MVP discussions.

“I think we did a lot of good things in the training room to get me back on the field,” Tucker said. “Then keep it up, try to come back as soon as possible.”

“Maybe,” Tucker said. “Maybe stay inside the ball instead. It will probably be better.
