The family of a man killed in an unexplained shooting in 2022 is hoping for new efforts to find answers that will bring them justice

The family of a slain Birmingham man is desperately seeking answers about his death nearly three years ago. Birmingham police are asking the public for help in identifying who shot Anthony Jackson II outside his home in early 2022. “He wanted to do something good for his community,” Jackson’s cousin Michelle Estelle said. “That’s why he moved to this area.” But just weeks after Jackson moved into the 33rd Street Ensley home, his life was brutally taken, according to Estelle. Birmingham police say Jackson was found shot to death outside his home on the morning of Feb. 19, 2022. It was Estelle’s birthday. “His mom got a call from the coroner saying, ‘Hey, we have your son,’ and she thought it was a hoax until she called and asked someone else to find out,” Estelle said. It’s been nearly three years since that call, and although time has passed, the grief and confusion are still fresh for her family, Estelle said. “It’s frustrating for the whole family, and it’s really frustrating, especially for his mother, because Anthony wasn’t the type to cause trouble,” Estelle said. “He was always trying to uplift the community. He did things for the community. This just doesn’t make sense.” To keep his memory and love for the community alive, the family has endowed a scholarship for Parker High School seniors pursuing arts education. Still, Estelle hopes the family’s biggest question will be answered with the BPD’s latest appeal to the community for information on Jackson’s case. “Why did you do it?” Estelle said. “Anthony would give you the shirt off his back. Why? It still hurts, but it would help to know what happened and that would give us a little closure.” Anyone with information is asked to contact the Birmingham Police Department Homicide Unit or CrimeStoppers to remain anonymous.

The family of a slain Birmingham man are desperately searching for answers about his death nearly three years ago.

Birmingham Police are asking the public for help in sharing information about who shot Anthony Jackson II outside his home in early 2022.

“He wanted to do something good for his community,” said Jackson’s cousin Michelle Estelle. “That’s why he moved to this area.”

But just weeks after Jackson moved into the house on 33rd Street in Ensley, Estelle says his life was brutally taken.

According to Birmingham police, Jackson was found shot to death outside his home on the morning of February 19, 2022. It was Estelle’s birthday.

“His mother got a call from the coroner saying, ‘Hey, we have your son.’ She thought it was a joke until she called and asked someone else to find out,” Estelle said.

It’s been nearly three years since that call, and although a lot of time has passed, the grief and confusion are still fresh for her family, Estelle says.

“It’s frustrating for the whole family and it’s really frustrating, especially for his mother, because Anthony wasn’t the type to cause trouble,” Estelle said. “He was always trying to strengthen the community. He was doing things for the community. This just doesn’t make sense.”

To preserve his memory and his love for the community, the family has endowed a scholarship for Parker High School seniors pursuing an arts education. Still, Estelle hopes the family’s biggest question will be answered with the BPD’s recent appeal to the community for information on Jackson’s case.

“Why did you do it?” Estelle asked. “Anthony would give you the shirt off his back. Why? It still hurts, but it would help to know what happened and that would give us some closure.”
