Viral court case of man accused of driving without a license takes another wild turn

A man who was seen driving during a virtual court hearing on his alleged driver’s license suspension never actually had a driver’s license, Judge Cedric Simpson confirmed Wednesday, Fox News reported.

Corey Harris, who became a viral sensation after his Zoom hearing on May 15 last year, had never obtained a driver’s license from any U.S. state, according to Fox News. The incident that caught Simpson’s attention was Harris driving while attending his hearing online, which led to his bail being revoked and an order to surrender to a local jail.

Although Harris claimed in an interview that his driving was legally justified and due to a clerical error, the facts revealed in court painted a different picture, Fox News added. The judge clarified during the hearing that Harris had never held a driver’s license in his life, correcting previous misconceptions about his driving status. “He has never had a license. Ever. And he has never had a license in any of the other 49 states or Commonwealths that make up this country,” Simpson said, according to Fox News.

“When they revoked his license … they revoked his license, not his privilege to drive in the state. So if he had had a Kentucky license, he could have driven anywhere Kentucky allowed him to drive. He just couldn’t drive in Michigan because his license was restricted. He didn’t have a license. Ever.”

The controversy surrounding Harris escalated when he interacted with the Michigan Secretary of State and wanted to renew his identification card on December 28, 2023, despite not having a driver’s license, Fox News reported. His attorney, Dionne E. Webster-Cox, announced plans to resolve the issue and reiterated Harris’ commitment to obtaining his license legally, which includes paying a reinstatement fee and scheduling a driver’s license test.

During a court hearing, Simpson criticized Harris for his lack of accountability but granted him bail for temporary release, according to Fox News. Webster-Cox admitted she was surprised to discover Harris had never held a driver’s license, citing her incomplete investigation into his background.
