Who raped Alma? What really happened, explains

After a misdirection, here is what actually happened to Alma in Netflix Raise your voices Series.

Raise your voices is a Spanish drama miniseries based on the novel of the same name by Miguel Sáez Carral and starring Nicole Wallace, Clara Galle and Aïcha Villaverde.

The Netflix series premiered on May 31 and centers on 17-year-old Alma (Wallace) and her friends Greta (Galle) and Nata (Villaverde), whose lives are thrown into disarray when Alma hangs a banner at her high school that reads: “Be careful, there’s a rapist hiding there” in Spanish.

Despite some confusion for those who have not seen the series in its entirety, here are some of the harsh events in Raise your voices.

Who is the rapist in “Raising Voices”?

Warning – This article contains spoilers and deals with cases of sexual assault in Raise your voices.

Raise your voices begins with the striking scene in which Alma stands in front of a sign that says “Watch out, I’m going to hide a criminal there” (translated: “Watch out, there’s a rapist hiding there”).

Some may believe that this “rapist” had something to do with an attack on Alma, but that is not the case.

After this first scene in Episode 1, the rest of the eight-part series tells the lengthy stories of the lives of these high school students, which ultimately lead to the arrest of a sex offender.

In episode 6, Alma’s friend Berta tells her about a history teacher at her school, Juan Lopez Sanchez (Iván Massagué), and how he previously sexually abused her when she was younger.

At the end of episode 8, when Alma outs Sanchez to the student body, the staff, and eventually the police, he leaves the school in handcuffs.

It is a striking image to see so many students (including many affected girls) leaving class to stand behind Alma and the others under the central shield of the series.

For viewers who have not finished watching the series, it may be surprising who else is standing behind Alma, her former tormentor.

So who raped Alma in “Raising Voices”?

In episode 4, Alma tells Greta what happened on her way home the night of the previously shown party.

She left that same night with her boyfriend Hernan because she was embarrassed to see Greta or her brother. Alma takes Molly with her and doesn’t want anyone to see her like that, especially not her parents.

As Alma describes the event, she tells Greta that she thought “If (she) hit Hernan, (she) would feel better:”

“And I must have thought that I would feel better if I fucked Hernan. But that wasn’t a good idea.”

The flashback shows Hernan and Alma having sex, with the former visibly more attentive and active than the latter.

On the way out the next morning, Alma tells Hernan: “That didn’t happen, okay? Got it? Don’t you dare tell anyone.”

When she and a group of friends later confront Hernan (after she confesses what happened to Greta), Alma tells him: “A real friend would have taken me home immediately.”

Later in episode 5, Hernan catches Alma in the school hallways and they discuss what happened the night of the party. Although this conversation ends with her telling him that he was completely in the wrong, there was no resolution or clear apology.

It is only during a bus ride in episode 7 that Hernan confesses: “I shouldn’t have slept with you that night. You weren’t feeling well.”

After he tells her he would like to take it back and apologizes, Alma tells him: “It’s okay, Hernan.”

As mentioned above, Hernan is seen directly behind Alma during the school strike that leads to the arrest of Mr. Sanchez and the eventual end of the story.

All eight episodes of Raise your voices are streamed on Netflix.
