22-year-old man arrested in MP for rape and attempted kidnapping of woman: police

A 22-year-old man was arrested for alleged rape and attempted kidnapping in Ashoknagar district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said.

A video of the incident made the rounds on social media on Thursday. In it, a group of men, including the main accused, can be seen brandishing a sword and dragging a woman out of her house in an attempt to kidnap her. The woman was rescued thanks to the timely intervention of neighbors.

“The main accused raped the 21-year-old woman and shot a video of her. He threatened the woman and her family members not to marry anyone else. Recently, the family arranged their wedding. The accused along with three others came to the woman’s house and beat up her father, mother and brother. He tried to kidnap the woman but was rescued by neighbours. Later, he brandished a sword and ran away from the scene,” said Vineet Jain, superintendent of police, Ashok Nagar.

Following the complaint of the woman and her father, two First Information Reports (FIRs) were registered in the matter.

The first FIR was registered on the woman’s complaint under sections 376 (rape) and 363 (attempt to kidnapping).

The second FIR was registered on the complaint of the woman’s father under sections 323 (intentionally causing hurt), 294 (use of obscene language) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
