Man arrested for firing a gun outside a house on Ninth Street

A convicted felon barred from accessing firearms and ammunition was arrested early Saturday morning after firing a handgun outside a home in the 3400 block of Ninth Street in Ceres.

At 12:29 a.m., the sound of gunfire was reported to the Ceres Police Department dispatch center. Officers surrounded the home and called the residents of the home over a bullhorn. Two juveniles and a woman came out and told them there was a man still in the home. Shell casings were found in the front yard. Officers entered the home and found 35-year-old Anthony Mendez of Ceres sleeping in his room. They arrested him and found a handgun with no serial number, a large box of live ammunition, and a high capacity magazine.

Mendez was incarcerated at the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on several offenses, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, illegal possession of a weapon, and illegal possession of live ammunition.

Police determined that no one was injured by the shooting.
