Sexual assault victim criticizes prosecutor for offering her tormentor a deal – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – After decades of suffering, a woman’s ordeal comes to an emotional end in a Miami-Dade County courtroom, but for her there is no closure.

A judge says 90-year-old Albert Bassett, accused of rape, will not have to serve a prison sentence thanks to a plea agreement.

The victim told the court that Bassett began caring for her children when they were just nine years old, even though he himself was 56 years old.

Now in her forties, she says she is traumatized by years of abuse and sexual assault.

“I am critical of the Miami District Attorney’s Office because, in my opinion, they have once again silenced me by offering a confession to a 90-year-old sex offender who sexually abused me during my childhood,” the victim said in court.

Basset must now register as a sex offender and wear an ankle monitor.
