Franklin teenager kills girl with gun he thought was unloaded, police say

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – An 18-year-old boy has been arrested and charged with manslaughter after allegedly shooting an 18-year-old girl with an AR-15-style rifle he thought was not loaded, according to an arrest affidavit.

On May 25, Franklin police were called to a shooting at 1417 Hanson Drive. A 911 caller said he was taking a victim, later identified as 18-year-old Lily Basil, to the hospital for a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, the police report states.

Dispatch told the person taking Basil to the hospital to pull over to the side of the road on Murfreesboro Road near Carothers Parkway to receive emergency medical assistance.

Emergency services took Basil to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, where she later died.

Investigators at 1417 Hanson Drive determined the shooter may have been Matthew Roufail. They were told Roufail left the scene to go to the hospital, the report said.

Roufail was taken in for questioning. He later told police that he had shot Basil, but that it was not intentional.

He thought the AR-15-style rifle was not loaded, police said.

Roufail was arrested, charged with manslaughter, and remanded in custody on $150,000 bail.
