WeatherWise Warning: Strong to severe storms Monday afternoon and evening

AM headlines:

  • Several rounds of attack
  • Serious threat this afternoon
  • Dry and cooler rest of the week

WeatherWise warning today:

Round 1: Morning – Thunderstorm in the early afternoon

A line of storms over TN could bring a storm threat to the mountains toward the I-77 stretch early in the morning

The biggest concern will be damaging winds and hail, but we will need to watch these storms weaken over the next few hours.

Round 2: Late afternoon – early evening thunderstorms

The next major danger threatens today near a cold front.

Destructive winds, hail and isolated tornadoes are all cause for concern

Discussion:

We’re currently watching a line of storms to the west of us that are still producing damaging wind and possibly even a few tornadoes. They should weaken over the next few hours, but storms will likely be in the mountains before dawn and continue to move east toward the I-77 corridor out of Alabama and Georgia. The biggest concern will be damaging wind. In the wake of the morning storms, we could see a few more storms move in this afternoon. Temperatures will reach the mid-80s today, with dew points in the 60s to 70s. There will be plenty of instability and enough shear to favor storm formation. Our biggest concern will be supercells forming along a cold front this afternoon into the early evening. Damaging wind, hail, and isolated tornadoes are possible. Once that line moves through, cooler and drier air will move in for the rest of the week. It won’t be as humid with temperatures in the 80s on Tuesday. Temperatures will drop to the low to mid 80s for the rest of the week, with storms expected to return toward the end of the weekend.
