Suspect arrested in attack on actor Steve Buscemi in New York City. We know this.

NEW YORK – More than a week after the actor Steve Buscemi was beaten In a seemingly random attack in New York City on Friday, police arrested a suspect in connection with the case.

Police sources tell CBS New York that 50-year-old Clifton Williams, who police had been searching for since at least Monday, walked into the 10th Precinct in Chelsea on Friday afternoon to report stolen property. When the officers took his ID, they recognized him and made the arrest.

Williams faces two counts of bodily harm. One is a misdemeanor, but the attack on Buscemi was classified as a felon because he is 66 years old, making him a senior citizen in the eyes of the law.

According to police, around 11:30 a.m. on May 8, Williams randomly struck a 22-year-old man on Third Avenue near 16th Street.

Less than 10 minutes later, Williams allegedly struck Buscemi as he walked on Third Avenue near 27th Street.

Exclusive video from CBS New York showed the actor, known for his roles in “Boardwalk Empire” and “Fargo,” walking south on Third Avenue and looking up to greet someone before crossing the street. A few moments later, Williams struck Buscemi, police said.

Another video showed Williams appearing to talk to himself as he walked north on Third Avenue shortly before the unprovoked attack.

Buscemi, a native of Brooklyn and former FDNY firefighterHe was taken to Bellevue Hospital for bruising, swelling and bleeding in his left eye. He was released but declined an on-camera interview days later.

NYPD investigating additional assaults in 2024

On Monday, the NYPD announced that serious assaults had occurred in New York City increased by 15% since the beginning of the yearand negligent assaults had increased by about 7%.

“We’re seeing an uptick, and of course that’s scary for all of us, but that doesn’t mean this trend will continue,” former NYPD Commissioner Rich Esposito told CBS New York.

In March, actor Michael Stuhlbarg, Buscemi’s co-star in Boardwalk Empire, was in attendance attacked indiscriminately while running on the Upper East Side.
