Dhaka District Registrar Wahidul suspended

The government has suspended Dhaka District Registrar Wahidul Islam, who is now behind bars in a bribery case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The Law and Justice Department said in a statement on May 12 that the Dhaka Metropolitan Chief Special Magistrate’s Court took cognizance of the charge sheet filed in the case on April 30 and sent Wahidul to prison. He is suspended under Section 39 (2) of the Public Service Act, 2018.

Wahidul will remain attached to the registration authority during the period of his suspension and will receive maintenance allowances and other benefits in accordance with the regulations, it said.

On April 30, 47-year-old Wahidul, a senior special judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Region, was sent to prison when he surrendered in court and sought bail.

ACC Deputy Director Mohammad Jinnatul Islam filed a case on September 21, 2021 for illegally amassing assets worth Taka 1.21 crore and making false declarations of assets worth Taka 94.50 lakh.

The anti-corruption agency filed charges against Wahidul and his wife Pervin Hossain Bhuiyan on January 9, 2024.
