Death of an inmate at the Crawford County Jail under investigation

(Denison) The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation has been called in to investigate a death at the Crawford County Jail.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, at On May 5, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Denison Police Department officers arrested a 61-year-old man for public intoxication. The person was placed in a single prison cell.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. on May 6, 2024, Crawford County Jail staff during a scheduled welfare check observed the individual to be unresponsive. Crawford County Jail staff, deputies and emergency medical services performed CPR and transported him to Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, where he was later pronounced dead.

A family member identified the male subject as Abraham Gatwech Ngor of Denison. A forensic autopsy is scheduled for May 8, 2024 at the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office hired the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to investigate Ngor’s death.
