The third suspect in the Edinburgh child abuse investigation is facing charges

A man arrested in connection with a child abuse investigation will face a judge Friday afternoon.

According to a news release, Mathew Martinez was arrested Wednesday in Beaumont, a day after a 17-month-old toddler arrived lifeless at DHR Health in Edinburg.

Two women identified as Martinez’s girlfriend and mother – Selena Quintanilla Silva and Maria del Rosario Castillo – were charged Wednesday with tampering with evidence, injury to a child, perjury and child endangerment.

Silva is the infant’s mother.

In arraigning both women, Edinburgh Municipal Court Judge Hector Bustos cited an affidavit saying Silva and Castillo confessed to hitting the child with a wooden board.

Officials have not yet disclosed Martinez’s role in the alleged abuse. A press release stated that he was not the child’s biological father, but noted that he and Silva lived together.

Martinez will be arraigned on Friday, May 10 at 3 p.m. The indictment will be livestreamed in this article and on the KRGV Facebook page.
