Wrong-way driver and three others killed in nighttime accident on I-75 in Royal Oak

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) – Michigan State Police are investigating a wrong-way driving crash on southbound I-75 that left four people dead overnight.

The crash occurred around 2:50 a.m. and resulted in a six-hour closure of the highway. Police said they received several calls about a black Volkswagen traveling northbound in a southbound lane.

Callers then reported that the Volkswagen had collided with a Dodge Caravan near 11 Mile Road. Royal Oak Police were the first to respond and closed the highway. The Volkswagen was on First Road at the time. The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of the accident, there were four people in the caravan. Three of the people were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The identities of those killed in the crash have not yet been released.
