The Astros said it was possible the Mets superstar could land in an unlikely trade

The New York Mets will not sell before the 2024 Major League Baseball trade deadline on July 30.

The Mets have played too well lately to warrant a sale. The Mets currently hold a wild card spot in the National League, and with just over a week left until the trade deadline, there is no time left for them to completely collapse and trigger a fire sale.

Despite this, Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso was mentioned by Tim Britton and Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic in their list of the top 50 players who could be traded at the trade deadline, though they said a trade was unlikely. If the Mets were to change their minds, they mentioned the Houston Astros as a place Alonso could land.

“In late May, Pete Alonso had a good chance of being the biggest player traded at this deadline,” Britton and Gleeman said. “Now that the Mets are back in the wild-card race, president of baseball operations David Stearns is much less inclined to trade the face of the franchise. In the event that things suddenly and significantly go awry for New York, well, Alonso could still get a nice return on his walk year.”

“This isn’t a breakout season for the first baseman. After averaging 44 homers and 111 RBIs in his first five years, he’s on pace for 32 homers and 86 hits. He could play for the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins and Seattle Mariners.”

It looked like Alonso could be traded earlier this season, but at this point it would be an absolute shock if he wasn’t in New York on August 1.
