Chicopee teenager charged with murder of Dexter Ortiz

HOLYOKE, Massachusetts (WWLP) – The suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting on West Street in Holyoke has been arrested.

On Wednesday, July 9, at approximately 11:22 p.m., Holyoke officers were called to the 50-block area of ​​West Street to activate a shotspotter. Upon arrival, officers found an adult male with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Baystate Medical Center along with two other victims.


According to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office, the 38-year-old Dexter Ortiz of Holyoke succumbed to his injuries and the other two people are expected to recover.

Nineteen years old Luis Rodriguez of Chicopee, was arrested the following day, July 10, on motor vehicle charges. When he was arraigned in Holyoke District Court, his bail was set at $1,000. The bail was revoked due to two additional drug charges for which he is awaiting trial. He has been held in the Hampden County House of Corrections on those charges since July 10.

On Friday, July 19, prosecutors announced that Rodriguez would be charged with the murder of Dexter Ortiz and his arraignment is scheduled for Monday in Holyoke District Court.
