Rosario Dawson has just spoken about sexual abuse as a child

Luke Cage Actress and feminist activist Rosario Dawson has spoken about her experiences with sexual abuse as a child in a new podcast. In Friday’s episode of Morado lens On the show, Dawson told hosts Cindy Rodriguez and Nathalie Farfan how the sexual abuse she experienced as a young girl shaped her perception of Hollywood and how she feels now in the face of the exploding #MeToo movement.

“I was raped and sexually assaulted as a child, so the world had been like that for me since I was a child,” she said in the devastating revelation. “So when I experienced it in the workplace, it wasn’t foreign to me. It was like this is happening even within the family. It happens to people who are supposed to look after you when you’re a child.”

She had already spoken out on Twitter in October using the hashtag #MeToo, but did not reveal any details of her story in her original tweet.

Dawson is also a vocal supporter of the Time’s Up movement, an initiative by 300 influential Hollywood women to establish a fund for women who have experienced sexual harassment or assault and may not otherwise be able to afford legal help.

On the podcast, she also talked about how glad she is that the issue is finally being addressed after decades of Hollywood swept stories of sexual misconduct under the rug or avoided. “Now we’re at a point where it’s finally saying, ‘No, we don’t need to keep passing this on. This is archaic and horrible and destructive. Let’s look at it,'” she said. “It’s beautiful. I’m so ready for this moment.”
