Death of Sean Burroughs ruled accidental by MLB – WSB-TV Channel 2

LOS ANGELES COUNTY – A medical examiner has determined what caused MLB player Sean Burroughs to die.

ESPN reported that Burroughs was found unconscious next to his car after dropping off his 6-year-old son for a Little League game at Stearns Champions Park in Long Beach, California, in May.

Burroughs was resuscitated but was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Los Angeles County coroner’s report, Burroughs died of fentanyl poisoning, which was ruled an accident, USA Today reported.

Burroughs, 43, was a standout Little League player and won the Little League World Series twice.

In his team’s first LLWS victory in 1992, the opposing team was accused of using players who were too old, Fox News reported. The following year, Burroughs threw two consecutive no-hitters.

He also won the Olympic gold medal in 2000. He was drafted in the first round by the San Diego Padres in 1998 and made his major league debut in April 2002.

He scored the first walk-off win for the Padres at Petco Park in 2004, but left the game in 2007. He returned to baseball and played from 2011 to 2012, usually playing third base, USA Today reported.

His father was Jeff Burroughs, MVP of the 1974 American League.

Sean Burroughs admitted to using drugs, but said in an interview with ESPN in 2011 that he would change his life.

“I just didn’t have the drive or the passion,” he said, according to Fox News. “I was physically and mentally exhausted. It just wasn’t there. I was emotionally drained. I still loved the game and respected it, but I didn’t have the drive to go to the park every day. I kind of lost it.”

Burroughs played 528 games in the Major Leagues, not only for the Padres, but also for the Tampa Bay Rays, Arizona Diamondbacks and Minnesota Twins.
