Driver arrested after man killed in hit-and-run in Cumberland County

FAYETTEVILLE, NC — A 25-year-old pedestrian was killed Tuesday night when a driver sped past a sheriff’s deputy and struck the man, according to Fayetteville police.

At 10 p.m., a Cumberland County officer noticed a red car speeding on Murchison Road. The officer was attempting to catch up to the driver of the car when he was stopped at the corner of Murchison Road and Pamalee Drive because a person had been struck by the red car.

The deputy stopped to help the person who was struck. WRAL News learned that the person, identified as Tyrone Thomas Jr., 25, died.

Another officer was able to locate the red car near the 2300 block of Murchison Road. As the officer approached the car, a chase began. The suspect continued on Murchison Road to Langdon Road and crashed into a car at the corner of Langdon and Ramsey Street. The driver continued up Ramsey Street and stopped in the 2300 block of Ramsey Street.

Logen Harvey, 22, was charged with negligent homicide, hit-and-run causing death and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers arrested Harvey and turned him over to Fayetteville police. He was held on $1 million bail.
